MacBook Air 2015 vs MacBook Pro 2018 in Kenya: Used Mac Comparison
Independent Infinite Tech Kenya guide, 31 October 2026. The Infinite Tech MacBook Air 2015 i5 8GB/256GB is listed at KSh 28,500; the 15-inch MacBook Pro 2018 Core i7 16GB/512GB with 4GB discrete graphics is listed at KSh 63,500. The large cost difference corresponds to different performance classes and equipment.
How to compare the actual specifications
The Air 2015 prioritises portability and older everyday Intel workloads; the Pro 2018 offers a larger display, dedicated graphics in this configuration and significantly more memory and storage. Neither is automatically the best purchase today, because software compatibility and battery condition are critical.
Software support, performance and cost of ownership
Inspect the 2018 Pro’s keyboard, display, battery, graphics under load, ports and thermal condition. Do not imply either device has Apple silicon or supports modern Apple Intelligence features. Check actual year and configuration by model identifier.
For a used laptop, a more important starting point than the seller’s headline is the exact model identifier, supported macOS range, CPU architecture, RAM and SSD configuration. Memory and storage upgradeability differ by model; assume neither is upgradeable unless that specific generation is documented. Review the manufacturer’s official specifications, not just an abbreviated supplier card.
Practical inspection checklist for Kenyan buyers
- Confirm year, screen size, keyboard layout, processor, RAM and SSD capacity in About This Mac and System Information.
- Check display pixels, lid, camera, trackpad, keyboard, speakers and every charging or connectivity port.
- Examine battery cycle count and condition; evaluate unexplained heat, swelling and shutdowns.
- Verify that no unwanted Activation Lock or organisation MDM restriction remains.
- Test applications essential to the course, business or editing workflow.
- Ask for the exact charger, warranty, return policy and condition grade.
Why the cheapest laptop may cost more later
Older Intel Apple laptops can require battery service, carry restricted software support and use less common replacement parts. A lower sticker price may be offset by repairs, outdated browser compatibility or unsupported apps. Conversely, buying the newest MacBook without a defined need can overspend on GPU or memory features. Compare the full working setup and expected lifecycle.
