ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 vs Gen 12: Which Challenges HP 1040 G8 in Kenya?
ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 vs Gen 12 in Kenya: buyers comparing these two premium Lenovo generations should distinguish an 11th-generation Intel Core platform from a newer Intel Core Ultra platform. The HP EliteBook x360 1040 G8 is also a relevant competitor, but this guide focuses on which X1 Carbon generation makes sense for an executive, business traveller or mobile professional. This is a manufacturer-documented comparison, not a claimed hands-on benchmark of refurbished stock.
X1 Carbon Gen 9 versus Gen 12: what actually changed?

|---|---|---|
| CPU generation | 11th-generation Intel Core i5/i7 | Intel Core Ultra 5/7 Series 1 options |
| Example processors | Core i5-1135G7, i7-1165G7 | Core Ultra 5 125U/125H, Ultra 7 155U/155H among listed options |

What Lenovo PSREF confirms about Gen 9
Lenovo’s Product Specifications Reference lists 11th-generation Intel Core processors including i5-1135G7 and i7-1165G7 for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9. These chips are four-core/eight-thread-class processors with integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics on documented configurations. Crucially, PSREF specifies soldered system memory with no RAM slots; do not buy an 8GB Gen 9 expecting an easy 16GB upgrade.
What Lenovo PSREF confirms about Gen 12
The Gen 12 moved to Intel Core Ultra Series 1, including U- and H-series options. These processors can contain a dedicated NPU marketed as Intel AI Boost. The particular generation of GPU and NPU capability depends on CPU suffix: for example, the Core Ultra 7 155U and 155H have different graphics and core configurations. ‘Core Ultra 7’ is not a sufficiently precise performance description for a product listing.
Is Gen 12 automatically the better laptop?
Not for every shopper. A verified, healthy Gen 9 with 16GB or 32GB RAM can handle office documents, conferencing, travel reports and many browser tabs. The Gen 12 has newer platform features, but its price premium needs justification by the user’s applications. A Core Ultra 5 H-series option may also differ markedly from a Core Ultra 7 U-series model: compare actual CPU SKU, graphics, thermal behaviour, battery condition and warranty.
Where HP EliteBook x360 1040 G8 fits
The HP EliteBook x360 1040 G8 offers a convertible 14-inch touchscreen form factor, so it targets buyers who value screen rotation, handwritten notes or presentation modes. Neither X1 Carbon Gen 9 nor Gen 12 is a 360-degree convertible by default. If touch/pen and flexible presentation use are decisive, read the HP EliteBook 1040 G8 versus X1 Carbon buying comparison and verify the exact unit’s touch, screen and accessories. If lightweight clamshell travel is the goal, compare specific Carbon generations.
Used-laptop checklist for Nairobi shoppers

- Test every USB-C/Thunderbolt connection and ensure the correct USB-C Power Delivery charger is included.
- Inspect battery health, screen, keyboard, webcam, Wi-Fi and SSD condition.
- Confirm Windows 11 support, vendor drivers and application compatibility.
- Compare the exact selling price and unit condition with written warranty terms.
Useful questions
Does X1 Carbon Gen 9 have an AI NPU?
Its documented 11th-generation Core platform does not include the dedicated Core Ultra-era Intel AI Boost NPU. It can still run supported AI software in CPU or GPU modes subject to application requirements.

Lenovo PSREF lists soldered memory configurations; verify the exact model before buying. Do not assume a normal RAM upgrade slot.
Is every Core Ultra 7 Gen 12 identical?
No. The 155U and 155H have different core configurations and integrated graphics; compare exact CPU names.
