DJI Osmo Mobile Battery Life and Phone Charging Explained

Quick answer: DJI’s up-to-ten-hour operating figure is a controlled-condition estimate, not a promise of ten hours with tracking, fill light and phone charging active.

Products to compare: DJI Osmo Mobile 7P — KSh 14,895 and DJI Osmo Mobile 8 — KSh 19,995. DJI prices were checked 31 October 2026, and current selling prices can change.

What the runtime rating means

Manufacturer operating-time figures assume specified test conditions. Real recording time varies with gimbal movement, phone weight, ambient temperature, accessory modules and whether the gimbal supplies power to the phone. The number printed in a specification table is not a reliable all-day filming guarantee.

Phone charging draws power

Some Osmo Mobile models can provide supported phone power through USB-C while recording. That is useful during long interviews or a busy livestream but consumes battery capacity that would otherwise run the gimbal. Test the exact connection and cable configuration before a paid shoot.

Tracking and lights change endurance

Multifunctional Module tracking and fill-light brightness can increase power use. As a result, comparing a 7P with the light on against an 8 with the light off would not be a fair battery test. Always document operating conditions, phone weight and recording duration when evaluating performance.

Planning a day out

Charge both gimbal and smartphone before travel. Keep cables safe from moving joints; do not rely on a gimbal as your primary high-capacity power bank. In Nairobi or on safari, pack a compatible power bank where appropriate and take breaks to check motor temperature and remaining charge.

Frequently asked question

Will the gimbal last ten hours while charging a phone?

Not necessarily. Phone charging reduces available gimbal runtime; actual duration depends on power draw and use conditions.
