How to Shoot Smooth Walking Videos With a DJI Phone Gimbal

Quick answer: A stabilized phone is only one part of smooth walking footage. Footwork, framing and correct balance make a significant difference.

Products to compare: DJI Osmo Mobile 7 — KSh 10,895 and DJI Osmo Mobile 8 — KSh 19,995. DJI prices were checked 31 October 2026, and current selling prices can change.
Balance the phone first
Mount the phone securely and center it before activating the motors. Remove heavy accessories that cause the rig to pull to one side. Avoid touching moving axes and check that the phone clears the gimbal body through the normal range of motion. A badly balanced setup can introduce unnecessary motor strain.
Practice controlled walking
Keep knees slightly bent, take measured steps and avoid sudden starts or stops. Hold the handle gently and point the camera toward a clear subject. A gimbal reduces some motion but it cannot eliminate vertical steps, autofocus hunting or movement created by abrupt user input.
Learn three repeatable shots
Try a slow push-in toward a stationary product, a sideways tracking move parallel to a person and a reveal from behind a doorway or object. Repeat the same speed and path twice. Record a short test in both horizontal and vertical orientations before filming an actual customer video.
Use advanced features deliberately
DJI Osmo Mobile 8 and 8P support unlimited 360-degree horizontal pan, useful for some moving compositions but not essential to every walking shot. The 7 remains useful for basic video stabilization. More movement is not automatically more cinematic: establish a reason for each camera move.
Frequently asked question
Why can walking footage still bounce on a three-axis gimbal?
Mechanical gimbals stabilize rotational movement; vertical body motion, footsteps and camera focus can still be visible.
