Detailed buying analysis
The difference within one generation
The HP 840 G7 has several supported 10th-generation processors. Typical Core i5 models are four-core designs; some Core i7 configurations are also four-core, while specific higher-tier i7 chips have six cores. A blanket claim that every i7 840 G7 has six cores is incorrect. Verify the CPU model number in the BIOS or Windows system information.
When the i5 is enough
For browser-based office work, teaching, spreadsheets, online meetings and accounting, a healthy SSD and adequate RAM often provide more tangible value than paying solely for an i7 badge. Compare actual applications, memory configuration, battery condition and the price difference.
When i7 may be worthwhile
Frequent large spreadsheet calculations, compilation and demanding multitasking may benefit from more CPU capacity, particularly where the actual i7 suffix gives more cores or higher sustained performance. It will not turn an EliteBook into a dedicated graphics workstation.
Touchscreen changes the comparison
The supplier’s newly listed i7 option is a touchscreen configuration. Do not attribute the extra price entirely to CPU performance: the screen and the condition of the individual refurbished unit may explain some of the difference. Confirm that touch actually works.
Before buying this laptop in Kenya: four non-negotiable checks
- Verify the precise CPU suffix in the BIOS or operating-system system-information screen; a marketing generation label is not proof of the installed processor.
- Ask for the actual RAM and SSD capacity, screen resolution, touch status and any GPU information. Manufacturer family specifications describe available options rather than the unique stock unit.
- Evaluate battery condition, charger, keyboard, ports, screen, webcam and Wi-Fi, and request the written warranty before placing a deposit.
- Compare the current product-page prices and availability instead of relying on a blog price quoted months earlier. Different RAM, touch and storage configurations must not share a misleading comparison price.

Who should choose which?
Students and online learners: prioritise reliable battery condition, enough RAM, the right screen size and a strong SSD rather than an impressive processor badge. Office buyers: consider keyboard comfort, USB ports, external display support and webcam quality. Power users: verify application requirements, sustained performance, exact CPU/GPU, memory limitations and cooling before buying.
