Gemini Nano and Android AICore Explained: Why On-Device AI Matters in 2026
Gemini Nano is Google’s family of models designed for on-device use, while Android AICore is the system component that helps compatible Android devices host and manage local generative AI models. Together they explain why two phones that can both open Gemini may have very different local-AI capability.

What AICore does
On supported Android devices, AICore manages local foundation models and exposes them to supported features. That can let selected AI tasks run without sending the whole prompt or data to a remote server.
Why local models matter
- Privacy: sensitive information can remain on the device for supported tasks.
- Latency: local processing avoids a network round trip.
- Offline potential: selected features may work without internet.
- Cost and reliability: some tasks can run without constant cloud compute.
Why not run everything locally?
Large frontier models demand far more memory, storage, power and thermal capacity than a phone can comfortably provide. Cloud systems can run much larger models and access fresh web information. The future is therefore hybrid: local AI for private, fast or routine tasks; cloud AI for bigger reasoning and live-data tasks.
Pixel 11 and Tensor G6
Google says the Pixel 11 family uses Tensor G6 and runs the latest Gemini Nano model. That hardware-software integration is one of the clearest examples of why Google builds its own Tensor platform.

FAQs
Is Gemini Nano the same as Gemini app?
No. Gemini Nano is designed for local on-device tasks; the Gemini app can use cloud models.
Does AICore mean no internet is needed?
Only for supported local tasks. Many Gemini features still require connectivity.
Does every Android phone have AICore?
No. Support depends on device hardware and software.
Why is an NPU useful?
It accelerates machine-learning workloads efficiently, reducing reliance on the CPU/GPU for some tasks.
