Lenovo ThinkPad T480 7th Gen vs 8th Gen: Buy the Right CPU in Kenya
Lenovo ThinkPad T480 7th vs 8th Gen Kenya: A manufacturer-aware buying guide for Nairobi and Kenya. Specs below explain real model families and what prospective buyers should confirm; they are not claims of independently tested supplier units.
Key differences and manufacturer-accurate facts
Yes, ThinkPad T480 can be 7th or 8th Gen
Lenovo’s PSREF lists 7th Gen Core i5 models such as i5-7200U and i5-7300U, and 8th Gen Intel Core i5 and i7 models, including i5-8250U and i7-8550U. Therefore the ThinkPad T480 name alone cannot prove it is 8th Gen.
The technical difference buyers actually feel
The PSREF 7th-generation i5 units are two-core/four-thread systems; mainstream 8th-generation i5 and i7 T480 options have four cores and eight threads. That improves potential parallel workload performance. Actual SSD, memory, system cooling and battery matter too.
T480 compared with T480s
T480 and T480s are separate chassis and should never be treated as one interchangeable laptop. Confirm machine type, port selection, installed RAM and storage-upgrade options using the exact Lenovo PSREF entry.
Used ThinkPad checks
Request proof of USB-C charging functionality, healthy batteries, clear display, undamaged keyboard, working Wi-Fi/camera and a written warranty. An ex-UK ThinkPad with damaged ports or batteries may be costly despite an appealing processor.
Which type of buyer does this suit?
Students and school administrators should prioritise a working battery, RAM, SSD and screen usability. Office users need reliable keyboards, cameras, connectivity and the right security-support expectations. Graphics professionals need the precise GPU model, dedicated memory if any, and compatibility with the actual professional software version. Price only makes sense alongside the condition of the real unit.
Five essential checks before buying used or ex-UK laptops
- Inspect BIOS / System Information to establish the exact manufacturer model and complete CPU suffix.
- Confirm installed RAM, SSD capacity, GPU model and display/touch options on the physical unit; many model families have several legitimate variants.
- Check screen, charger, battery, storage health, keyboard, webcam, Wi-Fi, ports and the hinge before committing to a used laptop.
- Confirm Windows/macOS compatibility, genuine licence where relevant, current price, actual stock, warranty and return policy.
- Use product page links for current WooCommerce prices. A blog should not preserve an old supplier quotation as today’s selling price.
