Noise cancelling: what is genuinely different?

XM5 combines QN1 and Integrated Processor V1 with an eight-microphone system. XM6 uses QN3 and twelve microphones. Sony positions XM6 as its more advanced ANC model, with adaptive processing. That is a real specification difference, but not evidence that every buyer will hear exactly the same improvement. The type of noise, ear seal, glasses and playback level influence perceived quietness.

Comfort, travel and the folding case

XM5 earcups swivel but the headband does not fold. XM6 has a folding headband. A traveller who frequently packs a carry-on or office backpack might choose XM6 for this reason alone. An XM5 buyer who wears the headphones mainly at a desk may place little value on folding. The best fit is personal; compare ear-cup pressure, warmth and how both headphones interact with your glasses.

Battery and Bluetooth value test

Both quote up to thirty hours of music playback with noise cancelling enabled and forty hours disabled. Sony does not promise XM6 will give a longer battery life than XM5 in all scenarios. XM6 supports Bluetooth 5.3 and LC3, while XM5 supports 5.2 and the familiar SBC/AAC/LDAC trio. Your phone or laptop must support the selected codec and mode; an iPhone does not deliver LDAC just because Sony lists it.

Recommendations for three Kenyan buyers

University student: choose XM5 if it fits comfortably and KSh 11,000 saved is meaningful. Consultant on frequent flights: XM6’s folding case and newer ANC may be worth the premium. Remote worker: both offer microphones, multipoint and ANC; test your conferencing application rather than assuming one model will cure internet or computer microphone issues.

If you already own a working XM4, our three-generation guide discusses whether replacement is necessary. For price details, see the separate XM5 buyer guide and XM6 buyer guide.
