Dell Latitude 7290 Core i5 7th Gen vs Core i7 8th Gen in Kenya
Dell Latitude 7290 Core i5 7th vs i7 8th: A manufacturer-aware buying guide for Nairobi and Kenya. Specs below explain real model families and what prospective buyers should confirm; they are not claims of independently tested supplier units.
Key differences and manufacturer-accurate facts
The supported processor options
Dell’s Latitude 7290/7390/7490 technical guide lists 7th-generation i5-7300U and 8th-generation i7-8650U among model-family configurations. The i5-7300U is a two-core/four-thread chip, while the 8th-generation i7-8650U has four cores/eight threads. These are real architectural differences, not mere branding.
When the older i5 is enough
For web browsing, point-of-sale, Word documents, invoicing and lighter spreadsheets, a well-kept 7th-generation i5 may remain serviceable. But software requirements, RAM capacity and supported Windows security matter; evaluate the entire machine before paying.
When the 8th Gen i7 helps
Multitasking, larger worksheets and more CPU-intensive office applications can benefit from the additional physical cores. Ask for the exact processor suffix, actual cooling condition, battery health and SSD performance; avoid promising a benchmark without testing the unit.
Watch for incorrect listings
The standard Dell documents identify 7th-generation processors up to i5 and 8th-generation processors up to i7 on these families. Treat any i7 7th Gen Latitude 7290 claim as unresolved until Dell identification, BIOS data and the real device agree.
Which type of buyer does this suit?
Students and school administrators should prioritise a working battery, RAM, SSD and screen usability. Office users need reliable keyboards, cameras, connectivity and the right security-support expectations. Graphics professionals need the precise GPU model, dedicated memory if any, and compatibility with the actual professional software version. Price only makes sense alongside the condition of the real unit.
Five essential checks before buying used or ex-UK laptops
- Inspect BIOS / System Information to establish the exact manufacturer model and complete CPU suffix.
- Confirm installed RAM, SSD capacity, GPU model and display/touch options on the physical unit; many model families have several legitimate variants.
- Check screen, charger, battery, storage health, keyboard, webcam, Wi-Fi, ports and the hinge before committing to a used laptop.
- Confirm Windows/macOS compatibility, genuine licence where relevant, current price, actual stock, warranty and return policy.
- Use product page links for current WooCommerce prices. A blog should not preserve an old supplier quotation as today’s selling price.
